Migrant workers' crisis creation of Modi govt's decisions: Manish Tiwari at e-Agenda Aaj Tak

Attacking the Narendra Modi govt, Manish Tiwari said the nationwide lockdown was announced with people being given just four hours to prepare themselves for it.

Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Manish Tiwari on Saturday said the Opposition is not trying to play politics over the Covid-19 crisis but is rather holding the government accountable by questioning its decisions.

"You must realise that asking questions is not same as playing politics. We are seeking accountability from the government. The Covid-19 crisis is the biggest crisis that India has seen after the 1947 Partition," Manish Tiwari said.

He was speaking at a session at e-Agenda Aaj Tak on Saturday.

Attacking the Narendra Modi government, Manish Tiwari said the nationwide lockdown was announced with people being given just four hours to prepare themselves for it.

"This is reason why thousands of migrant workers are suffering today and have been forced to take travel back to their homes," Manish Tiwari said.

"This tragedy is the creation of the central government. The manner in which the lockdown was imposed was wrong. People were given a notice of just four hours to prepare themselves. The government should have given more time to the people to prepare themselves and also made adequate travel arrangements for those who wanted to return home," Manish Tiwari said.

He asked BJP leader Jayant Sinha, who was also participating in the session, why the Modi government can't transfer money directly to the bank accounts of these migrants workers.

Responding to these charges, Jayant Sinha said this is not the time for political one-upmanship. "We are aware that thousands of migrant workers are on the roads trying to reach their homes. In such times, we should unite and try to help them. The central government is taking several measures to ensure that migrant workers don't suffer. The sate governments should also demand more trains for bringing back their people," he said.

Jayant Sinha said the government is helping people in villages by providing them ration and other essentials. "The government is taking steps to help migrant workers and we appeal to them that they should not travel on foot to their homes," Jayant Sinha said.
